Some time ago, people questioned the propriety of Stephen Colbert’s very pointed humor directed at George W. Bush, seated within a few feet of the podium at a White House Press Correspondent’s Dinner.
The best response I saw was that when people in power shield themselves from criticism, from being confronted about their policies, any opportunity to question or critique or scold or call them to account was an appropriate one.
The second Bush presidency was characterized by insulation, by people trying to keep criticism away. Stephen Colbert had the opportunity to criticize him to his face and the courage to do so.
I don’t know who this woman is, but I applaud her for having the courage to challenge DiDio and especially for having the courage to show her daughter that some things are worth fighting for, no matter how many people oppose you. There were hundreds of people in that room who reportedly booed her. There are thousands who heard that story and were inspired.
Anyone can boo for a moment.
But inspiration? Like Thomas Barnett’s band Inquisition once suggested, inspiration is revolution by another name.
